At least 15 people, including 10 women and three children, died and more than 25 were injured in a stampede that occurred at the New Delhi train station, the capital of India, on Saturday night, according to an official source.
A crowd was at the station to board a train heading to the Prayagraj district in the state of Uttar Pradesh to participate in a sacred bath at the 'Triveni Sangam,' the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers, as part of the spiritual festival 'Maha Kumbh.'
The stampede was triggered by confusion about the arrival of the train at one of the platforms of the station. The bodies of the victims were recovered at the scene, while the injured were taken to a local hospital for medical attention.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences for the lost lives.
In the midst of this tragedy, it is important to highlight the need to take measures to prevent similar incidents in the future, ensuring the safety of people at large events such as this spiritual festival in India.
