Indian child becomes youngest FIDE-rated chess player

Indian child Sarugia Singh Kushwaha has become the youngest chess player to be listed in the FIDE rating. He has surpassed the previous record set by his compatriot Aneesh Sarkar, who joined the FIDE rating last November at the age of three years, eight months, and 19 days. Kushwaha, a kindergarten student in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, scored 1572 points in a rapid chess game, according to the federation's website. To obtain a FIDE rating, a player must defeat at least one rated player. The player's father said in a statement carried by local media that his son's achievement is 'a source of pride and honor,' adding, 'We want him to become a grandmaster' in chess. Kushwaha defeated three rated players in tournaments held in his state and other regions of the country. The rating is based on a player's performance, but it is not an official ranking. Currently, the world's top-ranked player, Magnus Carlsen, leads the FIDE rapid chess rating with 2824 points.
