In the Indian state of Gujarat, in the northwest of the country, a five-year-old male was fatally injured by a lion in the Amreli district. This was reported by the Indian news agency Press Trust of India, citing a forest officer.
According to forest officer J.J. Valjela, the child was playing near his house in the village of Navi Jikadri yesterday evening when he was attacked by the lion and taken from his mother's sight. The deceased was a strong farmer, and his body was found after a search by the local population and the forest department staff in the area, after which it was sent to the hospital.
Valjela also noted that authorities are taking steps to capture the marauding lion. It is worth noting that Gujarat is the only habitat for Asiatic lions, and according to a recent census conducted by the forest department, their number has increased from 284 in 1990 to 674 in 2020.
