Early yesterday morning, a train heading to Delhi collided with a herd of elephants in northeastern India. As a result of the accident, seven elephants were killed and another was injured. According to a statement from the Northeast Frontier Railway, the accident site in the Hojai district is not a designated elephant corridor. A spokesperson for the Indian Railways, Keshav Sharma, said the train driver spotted a herd of about 100 elephants and used the emergency brakes, but the train still hit some animals. According to the statement, the collision caused the locomotive and five carriages to derail, but no people or passengers were injured. The railways added: 'Trains scheduled to pass through this section are being diverted to another line, and repair work is underway'.
